Sexual Health
Screening, Specialists, Treatment Options & Financial Protection
Sexual health is an important component of a woman’s overall wellbeing, encompassing physical, emotional, and social health. In Singapore, maintaining sexual health involves preventive care such as vaccinations, routine screening, and timely medical consultations.
Common sexual health concerns include sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea, as well as infections caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is strongly associated with cervical cancer. By understanding the risks and adopting preventive measures, women can protect their long-term reproductive and general health.
Common Sexual Health Conditions
Several conditions commonly addressed within Singapore’s healthcare system include:
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. Certain high-risk HPV strains can lead to cervical cancer if persistent infection occurs. Vaccination and regular cervical screening are key preventive measures.
Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea
These bacterial sexually transmitted infections may not always cause symptoms. If untreated, they can lead to complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, and chronic pelvic pain.
Genital Warts
Genital warts are caused by low-risk strains of HPV. They are typically treated by dermatologists, gynaecologists, or sexual health clinics in Singapore.
Vaginitis
Conditions such as yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis are common causes of vaginal discomfort and abnormal discharge, and frequently lead women to seek gynaecological care.
Screening and Preventive Care in Singapore
Singapore’s Ministry of Health recommends regular cervical cancer screening:
- Age 25–29: Pap smear every 3 years
- Age 30–69: HPV test every 5 years
Screenings can be performed at polyclinics, CHAS GP clinics, or specialist clinics.
Government programmes such as Healthier SG Screening provide highly subsidised cervical screening for eligible Singapore Citizens.
HPV vaccination is also part of Singapore’s National Childhood Immunisation Programme, with free vaccination offered to Secondary 1 girls in national schools and the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS).
Financial Protection
Maintaining sexual and reproductive health can involve medical costs ranging from consultations and diagnostic tests to specialised treatments.
Serious conditions such as cervical cancer may require:
- diagnostic imaging and biopsies
- surgery
- chemotherapy or radiotherapy
- long-term follow-up care
Financial planning and insurance coverage can help reduce the financial burden of such treatments.
How Insurance Can Help Cover Healthcare Costs
Singapore residents have basic protection through MediShield Life, which helps cover large hospital bills and selected outpatient treatments. However, it may not fully cover outpatient consultations, specialised diagnostics, or provide lump-sum payouts.
